5.4.1 Caldicott Guardian Circulars

SCOPE OF THIS CHAPTER

Caldicott Guardian and Caldicott Guardian Circulars

The duties and responsibilities of the Caldicott Guardian are evolving.

Currently the Caldicott requirements provide an operational framework for the Data Protection Act 1998 which which provides the key legislation covering all aspects of information processing, including security and confidentiality of personally identifiable information, and underpins appropriate information sharing.

The Caldicott standards apply to all social and health care functions within the council and the Caldicott Guardian is broadly responsible for :

  • Strategy and Governance : the CG should champion confidentiality issues at all levels and sit on the Information Governance Board
  • Act as the "conscience" of the organisation and as an enabler for appropriate information sharing
  • Confidentiality and Data Protection : the CG should develop a knowledge of confidentiality and data protection matters
  • Internal Information Processing : the CG should ensure that confidentiality issues are appropriately reflected in organisational strategies , policies , and working procedures for staff
  • Information Sharing :  the CG should oversee arrangements , protocols and procedures where confidential client information may be shared with external bodies and partners

The Caldicott Guardian in Lewisham circulates the Caldicott Guardian Circular approximately every two months. These circulars are designed to remind staff of current developments and to also remind staff of the six key Caldicott principles. The Circulars can be found by following the link.
